10-hour operation saves Chris Rea's live
Singer Chris Rea said last night he felt lucky to be alive following a ten-hour emergency operation.
The gravel-voiced star was rushed into surgery after going to doctors complaining of crippling stomach pains. It was found he was suffering from pancreatitis and had to have his pancreas and a part of his intestines removed. His weight has now plunged almost four stone to ten stone and he is diabetic. The timing couldn't be worse for Chris. His music is having a revival with remixes of hits like "On the beach" by dance act York popular with the crowds in Ibiza. He phoned me yesterday to describe his emergency dash to the London Clinic. Doctors feared the worst and send him in for surgery the next day. It's Chris's seventh operation since 1994 after a history of stomach problems. But last month's was by far the worst. Chris (49), now recovering at home near Windsor, Berks, told me "I feel lucky to be alive. The doctors were extremely worried. I'm trying to be positive and I don't want to think about dying, but it was extremely serious. I had been in pain for months, and the doctors couldn't believe I'd managed to bear so much pain." "I was terrified it was going to be cancer; thank God it wasn't. I waited eight days for my results. They were the longest days of my life". Chris had a tour planned and a new album; "King of the beach", is due out in September. He added; "a lot of young people are getting into my music in clubs and the timing is very cruel. I want to go to Ibiza but that's looking unlikely - I'm not allowed to fly and I'm still in pain."

Een particuliere school in Maine zegde de première van een nieuwe documentaire over John Lennon gisteren af, vanwege een geschil om de rechten van de film.
Berwick Academy had gepland om de twee uur durende film "3 Days in the Life" te laten zien, maar afgelopen maandag namen advocaten van de weduwe van de ex-Beatle, Yoko Ono, contact op met de school en wezen hen op Yoko's tegenstand betreffende dit plan.
Er is gedurende 3 dagen in 1970 gefilmd door Tony Cox, Ono's voormalige echtgenoot. Het laat Lennon en Ono zien op hun landgoed op het platteland en Lennon is te zien terwijl hij "Remember" en "Mind Games" schrijft. In 2000 werd de film verkocht aan drie mannen uit New England; John Fallon, Ray Thomas, en Robert Grenier, voor $1 miljoen.
In een brief aan Berwick Academy verklaart Dorothy Webber, Ono's advocate, dat Ono eigenaar is van de tapes die gefilmd zijn door Cox: "Mevrouw Lennon bezit alle rechten en auteursrechten over alle film, outtakes en videobanden die de beeltenissen van de overleden Lennon en haarzelf omvatten zoals ze gefilmd zijn door Anthony Cox in 1970." At 22:50 the Lennon's limousine pulles up outside the Dakota and Jose Perdomo the doorman leaves his post to open the car doors for them. Yoko gets out first. She is followed closely by her husband, who is carrying a tape recorder and some cassettes. As Yoko passes him the killer says "Hello". Lennon gives the guy a long, hard look. As John passes him, the man steps back and pulles a snubnosed .38 revolver from his pocket. He drops into combat stance, with knees flexed, arms outstreched and one arm supporting the other at the wrist.

As John turnes, the guy fires two shots into him. They catch him in .spinning him round. Blood already starts spurting from Lennon's wounds as the assassin takes aim again. He fires three more shots. Two bullet smashes into John's shoulder, the other goes astray. There's a crash of shattering glass as the slugs, that had passed through John's body smash into the Dakota's glass frontage. Mortally wounded John staggers up the steps into the Dakota's front lobby, his face horribly conturted.

After this, he rushes to John's side and removes his shattered glasses. Then he takes off his uniform to cover the victim.He wants to use his tie as a tourniquet, but can not decide where to apply it. John is dying, blood pours from his chest and mouth, his eyes are open but unfocused, he is gurgling and vomiting blood.is the terse dispatch that summones New York Police Officer Tony Palma and his partner Herb Frauenberger to the scene of the crime.From the sidewalk Palma sees Hsting and shouts up anxiously: Is someone shot in there? He runs up the steps with Frauenberger. In Hasting's office they find a man lying face down with a small woman standing over him crying. Palma turns the body over.He sees that the victim is badly injured and tells his partner: "Grab his legs and let's get him out of here!" As they lift him, Hastings hears as John's bones crack.By the time they lay him in the back of a squad car, John loses all control over his limbs. As the car takes off, the driver Officer James Moran yells at John:"Do you know who you are?". Lennon is unable to speak, but nods.The car jumps the red lights on Colombus Avenue.It speeds down Ninth Avenue into 58th Street and swings into the entrance of Roosevelt Hospital. The hospital's major trauma team is already alerted.The rapidly fading John is carried to the emergency room. He has virtually no pulse.The two bullets which had hit him on the back had both pierced a lung and passed through his chest. A third bullet had shattered his left shoulder bone, and a fourth had hit the same shoulder and ricocheted inside his chest, where it severed his aorta and windpipe.Afteran unsuccessful attempt at cardiac massage, a medical team of seven people laboures to save John using every device and technique available. Nothing works. The official cause of death is shock produced by massive haemorrhaging.

The Concert off Bangladesh
It makes me so happy that the Concert for Bangladesh is being released again. Hailing from Bengal, my heart went out to the Bengali speaking people of Bangladesh and it was natural for me to reach out and want to help the refugees and the hundreds of thousands of little children.
I expressed my concern to George Harrison. He knew about the turmoil of my mind and a concert to raise funds was initiated. An enormous amount of money was collected and this could never have been achieved without the help of dear George. What happened is now history: it was one of the most moving and intense musical experiences of the century.
Again and again I am asked which concerts stand out in my memory, and it is very difficult to remember all the prominent ones as my career spans over seventy-five years of performances; but the Concert for Bangladesh was very significant to me as the conception of the idea came from me and the people needing aid were very close to my heart; some of them, of course, being distantly related to me. Ali Akbar Khan and Alla Rakha joined me on stage for the first half and George Harrison played the second half, joined by other eminent musicians including Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. George closed the concert with "Bangla Desh," the special song he wrote for the occasion.

"Of the four former Beatles, Lennon had perhaps the most varied recording career. While he was still a Beatle, Lennon and Ono recorded three albums of experimental and difficult electronic music, Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins, Unfinished Music No.2: Life with the Lions, and Wedding Album. His first 'solo' album of popular music was Live Peace in Toronto 1969, recorded in 1969 (prior to the breakup of the Beatles) at the Rock 'n' Roll Festival in Toronto with The Plastic Ono Band, which included Eric Clapton and Klaus Voormann. He also recorded three singles in his initial solo phase, the anti-war anthem "Give Peace a Chance", "Cold Turkey" (about his struggles with heroin addiction) and "Instant Karma!".
Following the Beatles' split in 1970, he released the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album, a raw, brutally personal record, heavily influenced by Arthur Janov's Primal therapy, which Lennon had undergone previously. The influence of the therapy, which consists literally of screaming out one's emotional pain, is most obvious on the songs "Mother" ("Mama don't go!/Daddy come home!") and "Well Well Well." The centrepiece is "God," in which he lists all the things he does not believe in, ending with "Beatles". Many consider "Plastic Ono Band" to be a major influence on later hard rock and punk music. Lennon continued this effort to demythologise his old band with a long, confrontational interview published in Rolling Stone magazine.
This was followed in 1971 by Imagine, his most successful solo album, which alternates in tone between dreaminess and anger. The title track has become an anthem for anti-war movements, and was matched in image by Lennon's "white period" (white clothes, white piano, white room ...)

The Mal Evans Memorial Band is een Nederlandse coverband, die voornamelijk Beatlessongs covert in zowel het Engels als het Nederlands. Het is een Beatles coverband die die naam echt verdient. Zij wonnen de Golden Apple Award 2005 als beste coverband. En terecht.
De band is genoemd naar Mal Evans, road manager, personal assistant en platenproducer van The Beatles sinds 1963. Ook speelde hij op verschillen de nummers mee. Hij begon als "uitsmijter" bij The Cavern Club in Liverpool.
Het was Brian Epstein die hem vroeg voor The Beatles te komen werken. Hij werd doodgeschoten in Los Angeles op 5 januari 1976 op 41-jarige leeftijd. Hijlliet een vrouw en twee kinderen na.
En dan nu The Beatles in het Nederlands door Mal Evans Memorial Band.
De vertaalde teksten door Erik Bindervoet en Robbert-Jan Henkes blijken fantastisch zingbaar te zijn. Sluit je ogen en zing in het Engels mee en je zult horen dat het allemaal klopt. De humor en de melancholie van de teksten komen afwisselend naar voren. Eindelijk The Beatles echt in het Nederlands met de "geest" van Lennon, McCartney en Harrison. De vertalers verdienen waarlijk een compliment.
De songs van voornamelijk Lennon en McCartney klinken als the Beatles en Janneke van Heeswijk geeft met haar achtergrondstem een extra dimensie aan de covers. Muzikaal klinkt de band ook als The Beatles, waarbij Marcel van der Linden (leadzanger) geenszins heeft geprobeerd Lennon, McCartney of Harrison te imiteren noch te benaderen. Zijn eigen stem is meer dan voldoende om de "onherstelbaar verbeterde" Nederlandse teksten vorm en inhoud te geven. Nergens klinkt de uitvoering geforceerd, ook in het niet eenvoudige Sgt. Pepper.
De strijkarrangementen in "Iets" en "Het eind" zijn van grote schoonheid.
Vic van de Reijt (de kenner van het Nederlandse lied) merkt terecht in de begeleidende tekst op:
"Dankzij het historische inzicht van Mal Evans Memorial Band, die de geniale composities van Lennon en McCartney met de teksten van Bindervoet en Henkes, weet te kruisen, is het nu eindelijk genieten geblazen."
Mal Evans Memorial Band doet alle eerdere (ook echt mislukte) pogingen The Beatles in het Nederlands te brengen, verbleken, zoals de verschrikkelijke persiflage van Ria Valk op Yesterday. Wim Kan, cabaretier, vertaalde in 1966 The Yellow Submarine in "Jelle sal wel sien" en dat werd een echte carnavalshit. Leuk, maar toch!!??
De CD mag in geen enkele Beatles verzameling ontbreken, zo ook niet het boek "Help - The Beatles in het Nederlands" . HELP!! THE BEATLES IN HET NED

BEATLES ANTHOLOGY NOMINATED FOR EMMYS

The Beatles Anthology TV series has been nominated for the top prize in factual television -- an Emmy award for best documentary series.
The five-hour series that caught the imagination of the world when it was screened in 94 countries last November was nominated in Los Angeles last night.
The Beatles Anthology has been nominated for three Emmy awards: Outstanding Informational Series, Outstanding Picture Editing and Outstanding Sound Editing.
Five years in the planning and making, The Beatles Anthology made TV history as, for the first time, the Beatles' story was told personally by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. It is estimated that the series was watched by an audience of 420 million worldwide.
Neil Aspinall, head of Apple Corps. and executive producer of the TV series, said today, "This nomination is a great honour and it reflects the enduring worldwide interest in the Beatles."
Anthology producer Chips Chipperfield added, "It is a great accolade for a British-made documentary series to be nominated in this, the biggest TV market in the world."
This September will see the release of the Beatles Anthology video collection -- a double-length, 10-hour version of the TV series, which will tell the Beatles' story in even greater detail.
This autumn will also mark the release of The Beatles Anthology Volume 3, the final album in the trilogy of Beatles' unreleased recordings that has to date sold the equivalent of 25 million albums around the world.

The full text of the statement issued Tuesday by Paul McCartney on
the death of his wife, Linda:
This is a total heartbreak for my family and I. Linda was, and still is,
the
love of my life, and the past two years we spent battling her disease have
been a nightmare.
She never complained and always hoped to be able to conquer it. It was not
to be.
Our beautiful children - Heather, Mary, Stella and James - have been an
incredible strength during this time, and she lives on in all of them.
The courage she showed to fight for her causes of vegetarianism and animal
welfare was unbelievable. How many women can you think of who would
singlehandedly take on opponents like the meat and livestock commission,
risk being laughed at, and yet succeed?
People who didn't know her well, because she was a very private person,
only
ever saw the tip of the iceberg. She was the kindest woman I have ever
met;
the most innocent.
All animals to her were like Disney characters and worthy of love and
respect. She was the toughest woman who didn't give a damn what other
people
thought. She found it hard to be impressed by the fact that she was Lady
McCartney. When asked whether people called her Lady McCartney, she said,
"Somebody once did once, I think.''
I am privileged to have been her lover for 30 years, and in all that time,
except for one enforced absence, we never spent a single night apart. When
people asked why, we would say - "What for?''
As a photographer, there are few to rival her. Her photographs show an
intense honesty, a rare eye for beauty.
As a mother, she was the best. We always said that all we wanted for the
kids was that they would grow up to have good hearts; and they have.
Our family is so close that her passing has left a huge hole in our lives.
We will never get over it, but I think we will come to accept it.
The tribute she would have liked best would be for people to go
vegetarian,
which, with the vast variety of foods available these days, is much easier
than many people think. She got into the food business for one reason
only,
to save animals from the cruel treatment our society and traditions force
upon them.
Anyone less likely to be a businesswoman I can't think of, yet she worked
tirelessly for the rights of animals, and became a food tycoon. When told
a
rival firm had copied one of her products, all she would say was, "Great,
now I can retire.'' She wasn't in it for the money.
In the end, she went quickly with very little discomfort, and surrounded
by
her loved ones.
The kids and I were there when she crossed over. They each were able to
tell
her how much they loved her.
Finally, I said to her: "You're up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion.
It's a fine spring day. We're riding through the woods. The bluebells are
all out, and the sky is clear blue.''
I had barely got to the end of the sentence, when she closed her eyes, and
gently slipped away.
She was unique and the world is a better place for having known her.
Her message of love will live on in our hearts forever.
I love you, Linda.
